Tuthill Pond

About the Site

Tuthill Pond supports an interesting selection of animals. Water voles, similar in appearance to a small brown guinea pig, can be found on the site. This mammal, once widespread in the County is now restricted to a handful of sites due to habitat destruction and pollution of watercourses. It is hoped that as water quality improves, the water vole will once again become a familiar feature of County Durham’s wetlands.

Another animal found in the pond is the carnivorous water beetle. The region contains only five known populations of this vicious predator. The beetle larvae feed on caddis larvae, but the adults eat anything they can catch, up to the size of part grown smooth newt. In this pond it is likely that their main prey is three-spined sticklebacks.
