HMS Bulwark

The 18,400 tonne amphibious assault ship HMS Bulwark is the Royal Navy's newest Commando Assault and Command and Control ship. It is also County Durham's 'adopted' Royal Navy vessel.

HMS Bulwark 2006

Her affiliation with the County, through the County Council, is the second of its kind. The County's previous 'adopted' Royal Navy vessel, the 4,200 tonne frigate HMS Brazen, was sold to the Brazilian navy in 1996 after a very successful 14 year affiliation during which the ship developed close links with schools, hospitals, clubs and community organisations throughout the county and raised thousands of pounds for her adopted charities.

Now, through the new affiliation, the crew of HMS Bulwark are determined to take up where their predecessor left off. Durham County Council is equally determined that the link produces real and meaningful benefits to all sections of the community.

For those of you who are new to HMS Bulwark and her affiliation with County Durham, the following pages will acquaint you further with the ship, its past history, its current role and the County Council's hopes for the future of the bond of friendship that exists between ship and shore.
