Listed Buildings

There are over 3000 listed buildings in County Durham and a list of these is held by Durham County Council in map form, hard copy and on a PC database. The term 'building' is loosely used to describe a wide variety of structures included in the lists such as mileposts, grave stones and bridges as well as houses and institutional buildings. So a milestone in Toft Hill is classed as a listed building, along with Durham Cathedral.

The list is kept up to date as additional buildings are added to the list or if a building is deleted, so it is easy to check whether or not a particular building or structure is listed. In the first instance any queries should be made to the local planning office at the district or borough council. However, our Design and Conservation Team can help with queries about listed buildings or offer general information.

The County Council also retains lists and maps of conservation areas and the basic list of Scheduled Monuments. See our Archaeology Section for further details.
